Retina & Vitreoretinal Services

Protecting the Vision That Matters Most

The retina is a delicate, light-sensitive layer of tissue lining the back of the eye. It converts light into electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain, allowing us to see the world around us. Diseases affecting the retina can progress silently and are among the leading causes of severe visual impairment and blindness worldwide. Fortunately, many retinal diseases can be successfully managed, and in some cases vision can be preserved or restored through early diagnosis, timely intervention, and specialist care.

At Rods & Cones Eyecare Services, our Retina and Vitreoretinal Unit provides comprehensive medical and surgical management of retinal diseases using state-of-the-art diagnostic technology, evidence-based treatments, and internationally accepted standards of care.

Whether you require diabetic eye screening, treatment for age-related macular degeneration, retinal laser therapy, intravitreal injections, or complex vitreoretinal surgery, our experienced team is committed to providing personalized care aimed at preserving vision and improving quality of life.

Conditions We Diagnose and Manage

1. Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels of the retina, leading to diabetic retinopathy. Without timely treatment, diabetic retinopathy may result in permanent vision loss. We provide comprehensive diabetic retinal screening, early intervention, laser treatment, intravitreal injections, and long-term follow-up.

2. Diabetic Macular Oedema

Swelling of the macula caused by diabetes can significantly reduce central vision. Our treatment options include anti-VEGF therapy, corticosteroid therapy where appropriate, laser treatment, and careful monitoring.

3. Hypertensive Retinopathy

High blood pressure may damage retinal blood vessels long before symptoms develop. Regular retinal examinations enable early detection and help prevent vision-threatening complications.

4. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD affects the central retina (macula) and is a major cause of vision loss in older adults. We diagnose both dry and wet AMD and provide individualized management, including intravitreal therapy for suitable patients.

5. Retinal Vein Occlusions

Blockage of retinal veins may lead to retinal haemorrhage, macular oedema, and sudden vision loss. Early diagnosis and treatment improve the likelihood of visual recovery.

6. Retinal Tears and Retinal Detachment

A retinal tear may progress to retinal detachment, an ophthalmic emergency requiring urgent treatment. Prompt diagnosis and timely intervention are essential to preserve vision.

7. Vitreous Haemorrhage

Bleeding into the vitreous cavity may result from diabetes, retinal tears, trauma, retinal vascular disease, or other retinal conditions. We provide comprehensive evaluation and both medical and surgical management where indicated.

8. Macular Hole

A macular hole affects central vision and may cause distortion, blurred vision, or difficulty reading. Modern vitreoretinal surgery offers excellent anatomical and visual outcomes for many patients.

9. Epiretinal Membrane (Macular Pucker)

Scar tissue developing on the retinal surface may distort vision and reduce image quality. Surgical removal is available for carefully selected patients.

10. Sickle Cell Retinopathy

As a leading retina centre in Ghana, Rods & Cones has extensive experience in the diagnosis, screening, laser treatment, and long-term management of sickle cell retinopathy. Early detection plays a vital role in preventing vision loss among individuals living with sickle cell disease.

Advanced Retinal Diagnostic Services

Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of successful retinal care. Our Retina Unit is equipped with advanced imaging technologies that enable early disease detection, accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and long-term monitoring.
